Hexagram 48 is composed of 3 unbroken and 3 broken horizontal lines. This symbol is associated with wisdom and knowledge.
Hexagram 48 Wisdom and Knowledge Fortune and Prosperity Self-Reflection Issues |
Hexagram 48 from the I Ching is all about “the well”. The well, as you may know it, holds water for people to utilize for their everyday activities. However, wells also hold great spiritual significance serving as a symbol of life and sustenance.
Deeper wells are to be feared as they symbolize the depth of the abyss. Some can provide you with answers to life while others might leave you with nothing but more questions and wonderings.
Guidance:
- A deep well is full of wisdom and answers. Surrounding yourself with knowledgeable people can uplift you mentally and emotionally in many ways.
- Wells with clean and clear water are usually a sign of fortune and prosperity. Intentionally searching for such wells is pointless as you’ll stumble upon one on your own when it’s your time to prosper in life.
- Staring into the abyss can often lead you to unsolved mysteries, which is a good thing in some contexts.
Warnings:
- A well can magnify one’s emotions to a great extent. If it’s happiness and fulfillment that you’re feeling, great! But, magnification of fear and rage will obviously lead to bad consequences.
- When you look down into a well, the surface of the water can reflect your image like a mirror. Not liking what you see might suggest feelings of self-hate and powerlessness.
- Not being able to interpret the illustrations of a well can lead to great frustration and disappointment. Not all wells will communicate with you and that’s a reality you need to accept.
Hexagram 48 Message
Wells have sustained human life for many generations. As a matter of fact, many ancient cultures and civilizations viewed the creation of wells as a miraculous idea from the divine. What people can’t seem to comprehend today, however, is that a well can serve as a ticket to the abyss and one’s true image and intuition.
Even something as simple as a well can teach you a lot if you genuinely try to seek wisdom from it. A deeper well can produce clearer water but getting closer to the bottom increases the likelihood of collecting water that has stones and impurities in it. This means that, in life, there will always be an uncertain answer to what lies at the end of a road/journey.
Lessons won’t come to you in the form of revelations, so you’ll need to let your mind wander and creatively interpret whatever you feel/experience near a well.
Hexagram 48 Message For Love & Relationships
Time management can be a huge problem in new relationships. Couples try to dedicate all their time to each other early on and, when worldly duties call, the relationship starts to deteriorate. Unfortunately, there’s no “hack” around this issue. You’ll need to start setting realistic boundaries and dedicate adequate time from your routine to your relationship like an adult. If the relationship truly means something to you, you’ll be willing to go the extra mile and learn proper time management to keep things smooth.
Messages From The Lines Of Hexagram 48

Line 1:
Stumbling upon a well with crystal-clear water means you should quit beating about the bush and obtain more clarity about your true intentions. In practicality, this would mean you make your agendas known and be straightforward about what you seek from a person, meeting, or relationship. There’s no point in leaving someone hanging just because it “could be”. What you feel in the moment should be what’s on your tongue.
Line 2:
A muddy well is better than a dried well. When pulling the water out, impurities can be removed and the water can be purified at any stage. But, when there’s no water to begin with, that means serious trouble.
Major important resources and relationships in your life may be running scarce. You can’t depend on anyone for help anymore. When all your assets and supplies deplete, you can either drop your ego and take whatever “donation” you’re offered or find another way to return to baseline. There’s no right or wrong route here; it all depends on your situation.
Line 3:
Between a well that’s filled to the brim and one that has all its water at the bottom, people will always choose the former because it’s convenient for them and would fill buckets in half the time.
This suggests that when you’re out looking to build relationships and connections in this world, certain people will only stick around till it’s convenient for them. When it’s not and the friendship/relationship starts to call for a sacrifice at their end, they’ll dip out without hesitation.
Line 4:
An abandoned well is a reminder of a place’s history and the people that once used to thrive there. People disappear but their remains are left behind in places like wells where even a worn-out rope might suggest that people used to get water from there fairly often. Places we consider eerie and abandoned today could be what held an entire community together back in the day.
No matter how small of a person this huge world makes you feel, don’t forget that every single move you make has an impact. Some historic people are remembered because of their heroic acts while others are remembered because their wise moves/decisions have a ripple effect that benefits the lives of others long after they’re gone.
Line 5:
When a rock is thrown into a well with little water inside it, it makes a loud noise. However, doing the same with a well that is filled to the top will result in pretty much no noise.
When you’re living in self-doubt and have let it drag you to a very low point in your life, even the smallest blow from the outside world will send you into a frenzy. Remember, you’re not here to prove anything to anyone except yourself.
Line 6:
When a well’s water tastes unusually sweet and fresh, it’s not really the water that’s different but your energy. Think of the sweetness in the water as an embodiment of what you’re truly feeling on the inside. Joy, delight, and fulfillment in your heart can most certainly make everything seem better!
The I Ching covers pretty much every topic of life you can think of. Now, there’s even guidance on the discovery and interpretations of wells! Obviously, the well part is more symbolic but you get the point.
Regarding the advice about Hexagram 48, I would tell you to not overcomplicate things and just let your heart do the understanding whenever you stumble upon a well in your way. Now that you know the individual interpretations of each of the lines of the Hexagram, it’s much easier for you to interpret what a well may be trying to spiritually communicate. That’s all you can do on your part; leave the rest to nature.
